Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has prepared a draft of strict amendments to the country's law "On the Legal Status of Foreigners and Stateless Persons", APA's local bureau reports.

The purpose of the draft is to create effective mechanisms for managing migration processes and strengthening state security.

According to the document, additional requirements will be established for the admission of foreign students to Georgia’s higher education institutions. Universities will be required to enter into a unified information system data on the admission of foreign students, suspension of studies or restoration of student status, academic mobility, completion of education and other information. Violation of these requirements will result in administrative liability. Sanctions such as fines, restrictions on the admission of foreign students or revocation of authorization will be applied to higher education institutions.

The legislative amendments will also regulate issues related to granting residence permits on the basis of marriage between a Georgian citizen and a foreigner. A new residence permit for the spouse of a Georgian citizen will be introduced, and before it is granted, a special commission will verify the authenticity of the marriage.

A fictitious marriage between a Georgian citizen and a foreigner will entail criminal liability. Penalties will include the foreigner's expulsion from Georgia and a ban on entry to the country for a period of two to ten years, or a fine, or house arrest for a period of one to two years, or imprisonment for up to two years.
