Merkel enjoys highest support since 2009: poll

Baku-APA.German Chancellor Angela Merkel enjoys her highest supportive rate since her re-election in 2009, which scored around 66 percent, the latest survey showed on Friday,APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The opinion survey conducted by ARD television on a total of 1,004 people from Monday to Wednesday, following the EU summit held last week in Brussels.

The poll also showed that around 58 percent of respondents regard her handling of the eurozone debt crisis as "correct and decisive."

However, 85 percent of the interviewees held that the worst of the eurozone debt crisis "is still ahead of us", the highest ever recorded in the ARD survey.

Meanwhile, Merkel’s center-right ruling coalition led voters’ support with 35 percent, edging over the centre-left SPD with 30 percent, as the Greens got 14 percent and the far-left Linke and Pirate parties both on 7 percent.

The Free Democratic Party (FDP), a junior partner of the ruling coalition, has just seen its own popularity slip below the five-percentage threshold of parliamentary representation, according to the poll.
