Baku-APA. British government on Friday launched a new National Counter Proliferation Strategy, ahead of the Nuclear Security Summit scheduled in Seoul on March 26-27, the country’s Foreign Office said, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The new strategy aims to deny terrorists their access to materials and expertise that can be applied to make and use weapons of mass destruction (WMD), to stop certain countries from obtaining WMD and advanced conventional weapons. It also targets to build up the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), UN and other organizations as well as treaties that help meet these objectives through the international community.

British Foreign Office Minister for Counter Proliferation Alistair Burt said the strategy was already driving "huge amounts of activity."

"In the last couple of months we have secured agreements in the EU, IAEA and elsewhere to keep up the pressure on Iran over its nuclear ambitions; continued to work with Libya to deal with the weapons legacy of Gadhafi’s regime; and played a major role in negotiations towards a legally binding treaty to regulate the global arms trade," he said.

The Foreign Office also announced that British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg would represent Britain, alongside with heads of state from 52 other countries, to attend the Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul.

Speaking before leaving for Seoul, Clegg said nuclear terrorism was "a real and global threat."

He looked back on the first summit in Washington two year ago, where delegates agreed to "lock down nuclear material" in four years.

"We are now halfway through, and next week’s summit will be crucial in maintaining momentum," Clegg said.

He also warned that controlling nuclear material is not enough for tackling the nuclear threat.

"We also need to protect the information terrorists could use to acquire that material, turn it into a bomb, and mount an attack," he added.

The Nuclear Security Summit, the second of its kind that discusses international cooperative measures to protect nuclear materials and facilities from terrorist groups, will be held on March 26-27 in Seoul.
