Death toll of Italy’s Costa Concordia wreck rises to 30
According to the head of Italy’s Civil Protection Department Franco Gabrielli, the bodies were found in the underwater part of the ship by divers who set up a special robot to search otherwise inaccessible sections of the 290-meter-long vessel.
These five victims remained trapped between the hull and the seabed as the ship capsized in shallow waters off the Tuscan island of Giglio, and drowned in the sea, said the team.
Due to their position, it will take some days to recover the bodies, the team added.
There are still two people missing, and are presumed dead according to local authorities. Most of all other bodies have been found inside the ship, except for three that lied in the sea near it.
The Costa Concordia, which carried 4,229 passengers and crew members onboard, tore a 70-meter crack in its hull on Jan. 13 after leaving for a seven-day Mediterranean cruise, leaving survivors shocked by the captain and crew’s inability to give instructions on how to leave the ship.
Captain Francesco Schettino, 52, was put under house arrest a few days after the accident occurred with charges of manslaughter and abandoning ship, although he has denied any wrongdoing.
On Thursday, operations of Dutch salvage company SMIT to pump 2,400 tons of fuels from the capsized vessel were almost completed, Costa Cruises said in a statement.
According to the local environmental agency, waters surrounding the Giglio island that during the summer months usually receives up to 12,000 visitors daily and the nearby Tuscan coast remain "unaltered."
However, operations for the removal of the half-submerged vessel itself could last as long as one year, according to reports.
