Baku-APA. Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg confirmed on Saturday that the five missing Norwegian militarymen were dead in Thursday’s crash of a military transport plane, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

"It is with deep sorrow that I have received the final message that the five officers have been confirmed killed in the plane crash in Sweden," Stoltenberg said in a statement.

"My thoughts are with the bereaved and colleagues in the military," said the prime minister.

The ill-fated Hercules C130-J plane, which belonged to the Norwegian Royal Air Force, lost contact on Thursday afternoon 80 kilometers west of the Kiruna airport in north Sweden, where it was scheduled to pick up materials and personnel for the on-going annual winter military exercise coded Cold Response.

A massive search was immediately launched after the plane did not land at the Kiruna airport as expected, and went on for three days under extreme weather conditions.

The wreckage of the plane was finally found over a large area near the top of the Kebnekaise Mount and the biggest piece was described as the size of A4 print paper.

The plane was believed to have hit one side of the mount top, exploded and ended up in millions of small pieces covered by thick snow.

The aircraft was participating in a three-week winter exercise, which began March 12 in northern Norway and parts of Sweden with involvement of 16,000 troops from 15 NATO nations.
