Baku-APA. One person was killed and another seriously wounded after being attacked by a worshipper at a mosque in the northern French city of Arras on Friday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
At evening shortly before 7:00 p.m. local time (1800 GMT), a young man broke into the mosque Annour of Arras in the Pas de Calais, carrying a wooden bat with which he lashed out at two worshippers.
An old man aged 73 was beaten to death. The other was seriously wounded in the head, local paper Le Figaro reported on its website, quoting a source close to the investigation.
Three people were slightly injured outside the place of worship, including a woman who is unwell, Le Figaro added.
The assailant, 32 years old, was a regular worshipper at the mosque. Local media quoted police as saying that he had a history of "psychiatric problems".
The young man has been placed in custody shortly after the incident and should be subsequently reviewed by a physician.
French Interior Minister Claude Gueant who is responsible for religious affairs, reacted quickly to the event later at night. He expressed his great emotion on hearing the tragedy, saying the action is incredibly brutal and "a murder in a place of worship is particularly abhorrent, " according to the paper.
