Baku-APA. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said Kiev hopes that an association agreement with the EU that will bring closer political and economic ties will be initialed by the end of March, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

"Ukrainian diplomats together with their European partners are preparing the document for the initialing," ministry spokesman Oleg Voloshin was quoted by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency as saying.

Voloshin said the deal, likely to be inked in Brussels, is important for future agreements and the process of Ukraine’s European integration.

In late February, EU commissioner Stefan Fule said the EU-Ukraine deal would be initialed within a month and signed this autumn "if the situation in Ukraine changes."

However, the European People’s Party in the European Parliament made it clear early this month that the agreement could not be signed and ratified because there was no progress in the democratic reforms it demanded.

The trial, conviction and sentencing of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko were widely seen as the main obstacle.

The two sides failed to sign a joint association agreement in December at their 15th annual summit as the EU faulted Ukraine’s court system and freedom of speech and assembly.
