Baku-APA. Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Portas on Monday called the "unprecedented appointment" of the joint special envoy of the UN and Arab League (AL) to Syria, Kofi Annan, and his mission to resolve the crisis in the Middle Eastern country the "last opportunity to prevent Syria from spiraling into civil war", APA reports quoting Xinhua

"The unprecedented appointment of Mr. Kofi Annan, a former secretary-general of the UN and a Nobel laureate, as joint envoy of the secretary-general of the United Nations and secretary- general of the AL translates the will of the international community to put an end to the suffering of the Syrian people," Portas said at an open-door meeting of the Security Council on the situation in the Middle East.

He added that Annan’s mission "represents the last opportunity to prevent Syria from spiraling into civil war."

Annan, former UN secretary-general, was jointly appointed as special envoy to Syria by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and AL Secretary-General Nabil El-Araby on Feb. 23.

On Sunday, Annan wrapped up a two-day visit to Syria and held consultations in Damascus with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as well as opposition members, civil society, and religious and business leaders.

"Therefore, I urge this Council and appeal to all its members, to unite in public and full support of Mr. Annan and the objectives he has outlined, in accordance with the resolution of the General Assembly: end of all violence, full access of humanitarian aid and the launching of a Syrian-led inclusive political process, without which the cessation of violence will not be sustainable," Portas said.

Citing that Assad’s regime "remains deaf" to international calls, he said he also regrets that the Council has "not yet been able to make a forceful, unified position and make way for a Syrian-led political process, reflecting the AL proposals."

"How many more thousand dead will it take for this Council to meet its responsibilities?" Portas asked.

Syria’s government said last December that "armed terrorist groups" had killed more than 2,000 army and security personnel, while the UN said recently that "well over" 7,500 people have died in Syria’s violence, which began in March last year.
