Baku-APA. Slovakia’s Social Democrats (Smer-SD) party, led by Robert Fico, won the snap parliamentary election Saturday, exit polls showed, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The Smer-SD party won with 37.3 percent of the vote, according to an exit poll carried out by the MVK agency on behalf of private television channel Markiza as released Saturday night.

The Christian Democrats (KDH) party came second with 10.8 percent of the vote, followed by Igor Matovic’s Ordinary People-Independents (OLaNO) .

If these result hold, Smer will gain 69 seats in the 150-member Parliament.

According to another exit poll made by the Focus agency for public-service Slovak Television (STV), Smer-SD came first with 39.6 percent of the vote.

Last October, the Slovak parliament failed to ratify a bill on the expansion of European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) and the government fell in a confidence vote, triggering the early elections.

Prior to the election, all recent opinion polls show that the Smer-SD party is enjoying the highest voters support reaching up to 40 percent. The hottest question seems to be whether Smer will garner enough votes to govern on its own or will need a coalition partner.

According to Smer-SD chairman Robert Fico, if the party fails to gain at least around 80 seats in Parliament, they will try to form a coalition with some other parliamentary party (and have a constitutional majority).
