About 60 people were injured and hospitalized in the crash, local officials said. Earlier it was reported that eight people died in the tragedy.

Two trains collided in southern Poland on Saturday evening because one of them was on a wrong track. The accident occurred on the Warsaw-Krakow railroad near the town of Szczekociny, a Polish television report said.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Transport Minister Slawomir Nowak and Cichocki headed to the crash site, where a rescue operation to take people out of the wreckage is underway.

Nowak told the TVN24 news channel that this was probably “one of the worst railroad accidents” in Poland in the past few years.

The BBC reported that scheduled engineering works were underway on one track at Szczekociny station at the time of the crash.
