APA reports that the Constitutional Council abolished the law because this law is contrary to the French Constitution’s article №33 and freedom of speech.

The French National Assembly adopted the draft law on criminalization of denial of so-called “Armenian genocide” by 45 votes and sent it to the Senate. The draft law was also adopted in the Senate. Though French President Nicolas Sarkozy approved the law, 142 members of the National Assembly and Senate appealed the Constitutional Council and demanded the law’s abolition because it was contrary to the Constitution and freedom of speech. 65 members of t6he National Assembly and 77 members of the Senate signed the appeal.

The abolished law considered 1-year imprisonment and 45000 Euros fine for denial of the so-called “Armenian genocide”.

Yesterday French President Nicolas Sarkozy commented on the probable decision of the Constitutional Council and said that “if the Constitutional Council abolishes the law, we will adopt a new draft law”.

Votes of at least 7 members of the Constitutional Council are needed for the abolition of the law. French Constitutional Council consists of 9 appointed members and 2 former presidents.
