Baku-APA. An abducted Norwegian United Nations worker was set free late Thursday in Yemen after he was held captive by Yemeni armed tribesmen for nearly two weeks, Yemeni security officials said Friday, APA reports quoting news.xinhuanet.com website.

"Gert Danielsen, who was kidnapped by armed tribesmen from the capital Sanaa and moved to neighbouring northeast restive province of Marib two weeks ago, was safely released on Thursday night, thanks to successful tribal mediation," an official of the Interior Ministry told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

A provincial official in Marib said Danielsen was officially handed over to the mediation group and would be transferred to the security authorities in Sanaa on Friday.

Both officials refused to reveal whether or not the Yemeni government agreed to meet the demand of the armed tribesmen who requested release of their jailed relatives convicted of bombing an oil pipeline in Marib.

Foreigners were frequently kidnapped in Yemen as tribesmen in the lawless areas often resort to such acts to force the government to meet their demands. Most of the abducted foreigners were finally released unharmed.

On Nov. 14, 2011, three French humanitarian workers were released with the help of the Omani government after armed tribesmen in southeastern Yemen held them in captivity for almost six months.
