New OSCE chair says closer partnership between UN "indispensable"

Baku-APA. The new chairperson for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on Thursday said that "at a time of constrained resources and ever more complex transnational threats, a closer partnership between the OSCE and the UN is indispensable", APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The OSCE statement came as Eamon Gilmore, chairperson-in-office of the OSCE, and Irish foreign minister, briefed the UN Security Council in an open-door meeting.

Outlining the priorities during Ireland’s chairmanship, Gilmore said the aim was to ensure a "balanced and coherent approach" across all three dimensions -- politico-military, economic and environmental and health.

He cited that a "shared challenge" for the two organizations is to ensure "close and effective cooperation to tackle complex transnational threats."

"One key area of shared interest is counter-terrorism where the focus of the OSCE’s activity is to support the implementation of UN anti-terrorism instruments," Gilmore said.

During Ireland’s chairmanship, he said the OSCE will build on joint efforts to tackle transnational threats, such as organized crime, cyber threats, including cyber crime, drugs, terrorism and trafficking.

In the politico-military area, Gilmore said he hoped to see " continued progress on the updating of confidence and security building measures and enhancement of the conflict prevention capacity of the OSCE."

Within the economic and environmental dimension, he said the core theme of Irish chairmanship will be the promotion of security and stability through good governance.

"We firmly believe that weak governance undermines economic development to further international cooperation in this area," he said.

Based in Vienna, capital of Austria, the OSCE is the world’s largest regional security organization composed by 56 members from Europe, Central Asia and North America.

Ireland took over the rotating OSCE chairmanship from Lithuania on Jan. 1.
