Idea of ensuring transparency in NGO activities coincides with extractive industries transparency initiative, says Azerbaijani presidentâ€™s spokesman

Gasimov said that the National Forum of NGOs actively works both within the country and at the international level.

“As you know, the primary role of NGOs is to consolidate the activities of civil society and contribute to the fight against terrorism. Unfortunately, some NGOs in Azerbaijan regularly violate the law, and the founders of NGOs often seek to enrich themselves and commit other illegal acts,” he noted.

The spokesman went to add that there were many gaps in the legislation regulating the activities of NGOs.

“These [gaps] in turn were used to create favorable conditions for some NGOs to commit these kinds of offences that I mentioned above. In consideration of these, necessary amendments have recently been made to the law on NGOs. The primary aim was to ensure full transparency in the activities of NGOs. I have to say the measures being taken in this area has nothing to do with political processes. And the idea of ensuring transparency in NGO activities coincides with extractive industries transparency initiative,” said Gasimov.
