The implementation of the decision adopted by the Milli Majlis on December 19 to declare an amnesty on the occasion of the “Year of the Constitution and Sovereignty,” based on the initiative of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, has begun, APA reports.
The implementation of the Amnesty Act is being carried out in the institutions of the Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice.
It should be noted that the number of convicts in the penitentiary institutions of the Ministry of Justice to whom the amnesty act will be applied is close to 8,000. According to the preliminary list, nearly 5,000 individuals are expected to be released from imprisonment. Also, the number of prisoners whose sentences will be reduced by 6 months is about 3,000.
“According to the preliminary list, the Amnesty Act will cover a total of more than 10,000 individuals with regard to non-custodial types of punishment. Under the said Decision, more than 7,000 individuals are expected to be released from the sentence of restriction of liberty, which demonstrates the large-scale and significant impact of the amnesty in the field of probation.
The Ministry of Justice will implement the Decision in a phased manner, without delay, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the amnesty act.
The Ministry will also regularly provide information to the public about the implementation of the amnesty act," the ministry said.
It should be noted that today the Milli Majlis adopted a Decision on declaring an amnesty on the occasion of the “Year of the Constitution and Sovereignty.”
The initiative to declare the amnesty was put forward by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
