Addressing the meeting, Ukrainian Consul- General to San Francisco Mykola Tochytskyi sated that 4 GUAM member countries had the same position on Human Rights, regional and energy security, solution to the conflicts. He noted that GUAM had worked hardly since its establishment and it had permanent Working Groups in the U.S, Baltic Countries and Japan.
Consul-General noted that eight permanent Working Groups operated in composition of GUAM on all spheres, including energy and tourism. Moldovan ambassador to the U.S Nicolae Chirtoaca stated that there was similarity in the fortune of GUAM member countries after independence. To him, Azerbaijan, Moldova and Georgia were victims of aggressive separatism. He mentioned that GUAM’s activity was not against any country and it did not want to live under dictation of any country. The Ambassador added that GUAM member countries pursued the same policy and they did not enter any military and economic blocks of CIS because of the same reason.
Elin Suleymanov, Consul General of Azerbaijan in Los-Angeles said the organization was not providing pro-Western or pro-Eastern policy and it was interested in maintenance of stability in the region. He said even some officials in the White House couldn’t realize its importance in the middle of 1990s, when GUAM initiated to be established. The Consul General said Azerbaijan was the first among the post-Soviet countries to open its domestic market for the world leading oil companies and to choose the way of integration into the West. He emphasized that Azerbaijan pioneered the husbandry of that period, while Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan had more oil and gas resources. The Consul General reminded that the integration policy started in that period made GUAM’s establishment necessary. Touching upon the GUAM’s current role, Irakliy Alasania, Georgian Ambassador to the UN said it had a vital importance for the energy security. He said Azerbaijan was playing a special role in this network and reminded about Azerbaijan’s support to Georgia for the solution of two winters running energy crisis. The ambassador said energy blackmail to Georgia alarmed the European countries about the threat of Russian gas weapon. To him, a number of European countries seriously depend on the Russian gas today, giving an example of Germany, which purchases 25 per cent of gas supplies from Russia. Further, the hearings were developed with the questions of experts and students. The Event at the Monterey Institute of International Studies has been the third such meeting in the northern California this week. Earlier Azerbaijani Consul General in Los-Angeles Elin Suleymanov and Georgian Ambassador to the UN Irakliy Alasania attended the events at the San-Francisco and Berkley Universities informing the faculty and staff about the regional processes. On Wednesday, both diplomats together with Israeli Consul General in Los-Angeles David Akov informed the members of the influential US-Israel Public Relations Committee about the religious tolerance in Azerbaijan and Georgia.
