"The world's population will increase by another 2.4 billion units over the next 20 years, with growing shelter and care needs. In this regard, unplanned urban sprawl poses a threat to biodiversity, the environment, food security, and social fragmentation and physical deterioration," this was stated by UN-Habitat Executive Director Anacláudia Rossbach, speaking at the high-level opening session on multi-level and multi-sectoral climate action at COP29, APA reports.
She said that 40% of emissions come from housing and construction. This is a huge infrastructure gap.
"We need to build 96,000 homes a day to meet our sustainable development goals. However, cities are extremely vulnerable to climate change, with 70% of cities feeling its effects, with temperatures up to 10 degrees Celsius higher than in the countryside. 90% of coastal areas are at risk of sea level rise," added Anacláudia Rossbach.
