“Within the framework of COP29, a decision worth 300 billion US dollars was adopted in Baku, but unfortunately some countries say they are stepping away from these decisions,” Azerbaijan’s Presidential Representative for Climate Issues and COP29 President, former Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev said during the panel discussion titled “Beyond Negotiations: The Struggle to Keep COP Alive” held as part of the XIII Baku Global Forum, APA reports.
“In the early years we witnessed sufficient donations to the fund by donors, but currently the volume of these funds is decreasing. It is important to provide financial support to the least developed countries and island states and strengthen their economies. However, many countries are now allocating more funds to defense and security and trying to insure themselves against conflict risks. As a result, climate issues are being pushed somewhat to the background.”
Mukhtar Babayev also noted that 30 COP events have been held so far, but the implementation of the adopted decisions and their practical realization still raise serious questions.
“This panel may provide an opportunity to revisit these issues. Both former and future COP presidents are considering the prospects. It is a very difficult and complex period. Multilateralism and the UN system are under serious pressure. Therefore, we must think not only about increasing the successful outcomes of COP, but also about future challenges,” he said.
