All the climate-related efforts carried out by Azerbaijan are fully aligned with the long-term strategies of the D-8, namely the 2020–2030 Roadmap and the 2024 Cairo Declaration, said Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Umayra Taghiyeva during the “D-8 High-Level Dialogue on Climate and Cities” event, APA-Economics reports.
She noted that the world is moving towards a low-carbon economy, and D-8 must be at the forefront of this transformation: “Together with Azerbaijan, the nine member states now represent a population of over one billion and a combined GDP of approximately 12 trillion dollars. This provides us with significant opportunities. D-8 can become a leading force in the Global South for climate-smart and inclusive growth.”
Looking ahead, the voice of D-8 will be heard more strongly, especially as Azerbaijan has played a bridging role between Europe and Asia since joining the group. Inclusivity must remain at the core of our efforts. Our climate and urban policies must empower the most vulnerable groups and leave no one behind. The D-8 center will engage city mayors, community leaders, and youth, and our projects will reflect the real needs of local communities.”
Umayra Taghiyeva said that 2030 is the target both for the Roadmap and the global Sustainable Development Goals: “There are only five years left until this date. D-8 can lead the way with its diverse talents and resources. We can present new models – such as ecological city projects or financial pathways for green investment in our capitals.”
