"The climate crisis undermines food security and threatens the most vulnerable segments of the population," Kaveh Zahedi, Director of the FAO's Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment Office, said this during the panel discussion on "Enhancing NDC 3.0 Climate Ambition and Action for the Agri-Food System" at COP29, APA reports.
He said that eighty percent of the world's poorest people live in rural areas, where they face more frequent extreme weather events that deepen inequality and exacerbate conflicts.
“Sustainable agri-food systems can lift people out of poverty and address challenges related to climate, biodiversity, land and hunger. But we still have a long way to go. The Global Assessment and COP28 have clearly shown that increasing climate ambition and action in agri-food systems is essential for a climate-resilient future,” he added.
