A panel discussion titled Global ETS Development, Carbon Border Adjustments, and Türkiye's National Preparations was held during COP29 in Baku, APA reports.
The event took place at the Türkiye Pavilion at COP29.
Dirk Weinreich, Head of Climate Legislation and Emissions Trading Division at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Eyüp Kaan Morali, Head of the Carbon Pricing Department of Türkiye, and Amanda Luna Mera, Senior Manager for Latin America at Carbon Trust, delivered speeches.
Dirk Weinreich spoke about the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). He noted that one of the objectives of CBAM is to prevent carbon leakage: "We are extending the existing carbon price within the common market to imports from other jurisdictions to align the incentives of foreign producers with those of our domestic producers."
Eyüp Kaan Morali, Head of Türkiye's Carbon Pricing Department, provided information about Türkiye's approach to establishing its Emissions Trading System (ETS) and the upcoming pilot phase. He stated that they have long-term strategy: "We announced that our goal is to reduce emissions by 41%."
Senior Manager for Latin America at Carbon Trust Amanda Luna Mera discussed the organization's work in Latin America: "Carbon Trust works with companies and governments in Latin America on carbon pricing, helping them achieve climate goals. Carbon Trust's approach includes increasing awareness, building capacity, and facilitating dialogue between governments and the private sector."
Amanda Luna Mera mentioned that several Latin American countries, including Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile, are either implementing or considering emission trading schemes (ETS) and carbon taxes.
The panel discussion concluded with speakers answering questions from the guests.
