After handing over the COP Presidency to Brazil, Azerbaijan continues to remain active in the field of climate diplomacy, APA reports.
Thanks to the trust it has earned among countries as part of COP29 and during the preparation period for COP30, important missions within the COP process are being entrusted to Azerbaijan.
In this regard, in accordance with the Baku Financial Target decision adopted within COP29, Azerbaijan and Brazil, as the COP29 and COP30 Presidencies, have prepared the “Roadmap from Baku to Belem” on increasing global climate finance to 1.3 trillion USD and presented it as part of COP30. This roadmap, jointly prepared by the two COP Presidencies, has been highly valued and positively received by most states.
Also, at the request of the Brazilian side, Azerbaijan has been entrusted with conducting negotiations on the following two important decisions expected to be adopted at COP30 and approval of those documents:
- The decision on determining the host of COP31
COP30 President André do Lago has authorized Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yalchin Rafiyev and Brazil’s Special Envoy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mauricio Lyrio, on behalf of the COP30 Presidency, to conduct high-level negotiations on determining the host of COP31. Australia and Türkiye are competing to host COP31. Currently, both authorized representatives are intensively mediating the negotiations between Australia and Türkiye, attempting to determine a solution.
- Approval of the document on the Global Stocktake (GST) of the Paris Agreement considered as one of the most important possible outcomes of COP30
COP30 President André do Lago has given the mandate to the representatives of Azerbaijan and Norway to lead the process on his behalf and to conduct negotiations among the states. These negotiations are led on the Azerbaijani side by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yalchin Rafiyev, and on the Norwegian side by that country’s Minister of Climate and Environment Andreas Bjelland Eriksen.
