"The impacts of climate change are felt every day," COP29 President, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mukhtar Babayev, said during the plenary session on Scaling up climate action on loss and damage: full operationalization of the Santiago Network within the framework of COP29, APA reports.
He noted that extreme weather events are becoming more widespread and severe. Increasing natural disasters are displacing people from their homes and damaging ecosystems day by day: “This year, during meetings with communities affected by climate change in Pakistan, Tonga, Ethiopia, Congo, and the Caribbean, as well as during visits to other countries, we witnessed this firsthand. That is why this has been a key priority at COP29. The Santiago Network helps bridge knowledge gaps on loss, damage, and resilience. This year, the COP29 Presidency has worked to facilitate the operationalization of the Santiago Network. We have achieved significant progress on loss and damage at COP29. Today’s event is another opportunity to advance.”
