"About 20% of methane emissions are from the waste sector," COP29 President, the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev said at the "High-level event on reducing methane from organic waste for climate action" held in Baku within the framework of COP29, APA reports.
He noted that methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and the waste sector is the fastest growing source of methane:
"This problem arises when organic waste decomposes in landfills, open ponds and wastewater. According to UNEP's Global Methane Assessment, to be compatible with 1.5 degree scenarios, the world needs to reduce methane emissions from the waste sector by 30-35% by 2030 and by about 55% by 2050. These reductions are necessary not only for the climate, but also to provide significant social and economic benefits."
"The waste sector presents a unique opportunity for transformational change. Today, we are adopting the COP29 Declaration on reducing methane from organic waste. This Declaration aims to promote increased targets and inspire more governments to join the Global Methane Commitment," the minister added.
