"Climate change is a major and pressing concern for all people around the world," Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said at the Parliamentary Meeting jointly organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan within the framework of COP29, APA reports.
Simon Stiell stated that parliaments can support concrete steps that change the lives of citizens: “Concrete action must be taken in the fight for a livable world. Climate action is lagging far behind what is needed. We know that the planet is on track for a temperature rise between 2.6 and 3.1 degrees. If we want to avoid the worst disaster humanity has ever known, we are far from the goal of limiting the rise to 1.5 degrees. From hurricanes like Beril, Milton, and Helene to observed floods and heatwaves, such as those we witnessed during Hajj, we are seeing increasingly severe disasters around the world. If we don't close the gap between where we are and where we should be, it will only worsen. We need plans that help us take more action. We need policies that enable people to go further. And we also know that ambition alone will not be enough. We must address the implementation gap."
