"I'm eager to meet Prime Minister Iurie Leanca in Brussels on June 27, when we will sign the Association Agreement by common consent," the EC official told a press conference after meeting with Iurie Leanca, stressing that "the moment will be really important both for Moldova and the EU."
The EC president invited Moldovan Prime Minister Iurie Leanca to sign the Association Agreement, including the Free Trade Agreement, at an extraordinary Moldova-EU summit in Brussels, according to a government release reaching here from Chisinau, capital of Moldova.
The leaders of the 28-EU member countries will attend the ceremony, according to the same source.
Leanca thanked Herman Van Rompuy for the invitation, which he described as a sign of support and encouragement.
He stated that the visit of EC head "confirms at the highest political level that Moldova is among the external political priorities of the EU."
Meanwhile, Van Rompuy underlined at the press conference that Moldova is a free and sovereign state that can make choices by itself.
"We reject any kind of external pressure and support the territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova," said the EC president.
Van Rompuy arrived in Chisinau Tuesday for a visit of several hours. It is his second visit to the country.
Moldova, together with Georgia, initialed their respective Association Agreements with the EU at the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, on November 28 last year.
