The State Duma has adopted a bill on the cancellation of the agreement between Russia and the United States on the disposal of nuclear plutonium, APA reports, citing The Moscow Times.
According to the terms of the agreement, both countries were to dispose of 34 tons of plutonium from the "cores" of nuclear missiles. At that time, this core was considered surplus for military purposes. In addition, a number of protocols related to the agreement will be canceled.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stressed that "it is unacceptable for Russia to maintain its obligations under the plutonium agreement with the United States."
The statement said that the cancellation of the agreement occurred due to "US actions." The State Duma's international affairs committee indicated that the purpose of the bill was to prevent threats to Russia's national security.
