A religious procession involving a large number of participants is taking place on the streets of Yerevan under the leadership of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, APA reports, citing Armenian media.
According to Pashinyan, the main objectives of the procession include “celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, demonstrating loyalty to the sacred traditions of the Armenian Church, and most importantly, supporting church reforms.”
“A key objective is to support church reform within the framework of a statement we issued together with a group of bishops,” he said.
The prime minister added that the procession also aims to express support for statehood and to emphasize the unacceptability of the Armenian Church’s de facto leadership and its close circle using the church as a tool of hybrid struggle against the state’s sovereignty and independence. Pashinyan stressed that such practices will not be allowed to continue.
He stated that the procession would be “peaceful in nature, filled with Christian love, and carried out with determination toward reforming the Armenian Church.”
“The procession will conclude at the intersection of Sayat Nova and Abovyan streets, where a brief — very brief — gathering will be held,” Pashinyan noted.
Recall that since May of last year, the Armenian authorities have been demanding the resignation of Karekin II.
