"Currently, 1,250,000 people in Russia are infected with HIV, which is more than 1% of the population. This means that one in every 100 citizens in the country is infected," said Vadim Pokrovsky, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and head of the specialized research department for AIDS prevention and control at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, APA's Moscow bureau reports.
According to him, there are currently about 1,250,000 people infected with HIV in Russia. These are people who have detected HIV antibodies, which are considered a reliable indicator of infection: "The risk of infection is very high. If we consider only adults aged 15-50 in our country, this is more than 1%. This means that one in every 100 people in the country is infected. If we consider specific age groups, for example, men aged 40-45, this figure is 4%. This means that one in every 25 men is infected," he said at a press conference.
The academician stressed that the situation with HIV is very serious not only in Russia, but throughout the world.
