Moscow is ready to normalize relations with Tbilisi, but sees no grounds for resuming political dialogue, the Russian Foreign Ministry (MFA) told Izvestia, APA's local bureau reports.
It was noted that the main disagreement is related to Georgia's position on the Tskhinvali region and Abkhazia.
"Nevertheless, Russia is ready to take steps towards normalizing relations with Georgia. The ball is on Georgia's side, and we believe that Tbilisi should be more interested in this issue than anyone else," the MFA said.
Commenting on the MFA's statement, Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Georgian Parliament's Foreign Relations Committee, said that if Russia wants to have normal diplomatic relations with Georgia, it should withdraw its troops from the occupied territories and recognize Georgia's territorial integrity.
According to him, Georgia's interest is in ending the occupation and restoring its territorial integrity: "This process is being hindered by Russia, it is Russia that is the occupier of Georgian territories. Russia must withdraw its troops and recognize our territorial integrity. This is our response, and Russia has long known this."
