Senior Far Eastern Lawmaker Detained on Embezzlement Charges

Baku-APA.The speaker of the Far Eastern Primorye Territory’s legislative assembly, Yevgeny Ovechkin, was detained on embezzlement charges, the Far Eastern Investigation Department said on Sunday, APA reports quoting RIA Novosti.
It was earlier reported that his office was searched, but no further details were disclosed.
“The investigation believes that the suspect fraudulently obtained oil products worth at least 38 million rubles ($1.3 million) from a commercial firm, and used them at his own convenience,†the regional investigation department said in a statement.
Charges against Ovechkin entail a maximum punishment of five years in prison.
Investigators are currently seizing various documentation and question possible witnesses.
