Baku-APA. Suspected renegade Muslim rebels killed two soldiers in an attack on Tuesday in the restive southern Philippines, a military official said on Wednesday, APA reporrts quoting Xinhua.
The victims were identified as Private First Class Rex Limpahan and Edward Baes who were attacked around 9:00 a.m. by seven members of Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) as they left St. Therese Parish Church in Datu Piang town in Maguindanao, said Colonel Dickson Hermoso, spokesman for the military's 6th Division.
"We condemned the attack. They were unarmed. The two were at the Church as Limpahan was celebrating his birthday," Hermoso said.
The military official said the attackers were armed with .45 and 9 mm pistols.
The BIFF has carried out many deadly attacks in a bid to disrupt the peace negotiations between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the government.
The BIFF is the armed wing of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement which broke away from the MILF in 2010 as a result of disagreements over the conduct of peace talks with the government.
