Kidnapped UNICEF worker released in Yemen

The source, who requested anonymity, added that James Massaquoi had arrived in Sanaa and that he was in good health before he left for Sierra Leone.

The source did not, however, mention how Massaquoi was set free. There has been no comment from Yemeni authorities on this news either.

Massaquoi, a citizen of Sierra Leone, is a water engineer who had worked in Yemen to help provide water and sanitation services.

On October 26 last year, he was kidnapped by unknown people from the office of UNICEF in northern Sanaa and taken to an unknown place.

In July, Yemeni activists launched a new campaign to call for his release and also denounce the kidnapping of foreigners in Yemen.

The kidnapping of foreigners has been rampant in a number of Yemeni provinces for several years now.

The poor Arab country descended into chaos soon after a popular uprising in 2011 ousted longstanding president Ali Abdullah Saleh a year later.
