Indian prime minister to reshuffle cabinet

The reshuffling is expected to take place at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official presidential palace, in New Delhi on Sunday.

Reports suggest Manohar Parrikar, a regional leader of Modi’s Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) who recently resigned as chief minister of Goa State, is to become the country’s new defense minister.

Parrikar will replace Arun Jaitley, who has been acting as both defense and finance minister.

Other BJP leaders such as Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Bandaru Datttatreya are also expected to receive new positions. Some new faces are expected to join the new cabinet as well.

Analysts say the decision comes as Modi may have realized that some of his ministers, who had been given two key positions, were overburdened.

Modi, 63, won the elections in India back in March.
