Baku-APA. G20 leaders needed to focus on youth unemployment, climate change, and sustainable development, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Saturday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
Addressing the media in Brisbane, where the two-day G20 leaders meeting is being hosted by Australia, Ban said the G20's aim to boost global economic growth by 2 percent over the next five years was admirable, but it was important to emphasis quality growth, not just quantity.
"We must pursue an agenda that promotes sustainability and generates decent jobs, especially for young people," he said.
Ban said meeting climate challenges was a critical issue facing the world, and praised the recent pact signed between the United States and China to reduce greenhouse emissions over the coming decades.
"I urge major economies and other leaders, especially among the G20 to come forward with contributions which can sustain this momentum," he said.
"The world looks at the G20 to lead on climate finance. I urge G20 leaders to make ambitious pledges towards the capitalization of the Green Climate Fund," he said.
"We must quickly and decisively if we want to avoid increasingly destructive outcomes. We have the means to limit climate change and build a better future," he said.
Climate change is the defining issue of our times, Ban added, it's only natural that G20 leaders should focus much more on this as part of making this world sustainable in three dimensions -- economic, social and environmental.
The UN secretary-general said G20 members needed to provide financing for sustainable development through public and private investment.
"I call on the G20 to continue its efforts to reform the global financial system, strengthen tax systems, fight corruption and redefine their commitment," he said.
