Baku-APAAt least three people were killed and eight others injured when a blast hit a police convoy in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi on Thursday night, local media and officials said, APA reports quoting XInhua.

Additional Inspector General (AIG) Police Ghulam Qadir said that Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Farooq Awan's convoy was passing by Defense Phase Four area of Karachi when it came under attack.

He said that the SSP was on his way back home when his bullet- proof double cabin vehicle was hit by a bomb planted in a roadside parked car.

He said that the SSP got minor injuries in the attack and has been shifted to his house after medical treatment.

Some local media reports said that the explosion was carried out by a suicide bomber, but the AIG ruled out all such speculations.

ARY News said that three bodies, including two policemen, and eight injured people have been shifted to a nearby hospital.

The injured people included five policemen and two civilians, said the report.

Two police vehicles and a motorbike were destroyed in the blast.

Shortly after the incident, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan Jundullah group took credit of the attack, confirming that SSP Farooq Awan was their target due to his operations against their accomplices in Karachi.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the attack and expressed his condolence to the families of the victims.
