Baku-APA. The Yemeni Defense Ministry said 93 soldiers and officers of the Republican Guard were sentenced Saturday to three to seven years in prison for rejecting President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi's orders and attacking the defense ministry headquarters in Augustm, APA reports.
The prosecution was carried out by the country's military court in the capital of Sanaa, the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.
The soldiers belong to the Republican Guard led by General Ahmed Ali, the son of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh who was forced to step down following last year's massive street protests.
They took part in mutiny over a military restructure decree issued by Hadi and attacked the defense ministry building with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades on Aug. 14, during which four people were killed.
The presidential decree was issued on Aug. 6, in which Hadi removed about 20 military generals from their posts, including several relative and loyalists to Saleh, in a move to restructure the army.
The decree was part of major military reforms in the divided army carried out by Hadi since he was elected in February, in light of a UN-backed power transfer deal.
