Baku-APA. Russian diplomats have been in contact with citizens of Russia currently in Syria, and are ready to assist them in case of emergency, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said on Monday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

"We have got plans for every situation and have got a clear idea where our citizens are located," Bogdanov told the Itar-Tass news agency.

He said that the Russian embassy in Syria has been in contact with Russian citizens in various areas of that country. They are mostly Russian women married to Syrian nationals or diplomatic staff.

The Kremlin special envoy to the Middle East also noted that Russia is ready to evacuate its citizens from Syria should they desire so.

"In any case, several planes will be needed. There are capabilities for that," he added.

Last Friday, Egypt Air and the Dubai-based Emirates Airlines canceled their flights to the Syrian capital Damascus citing security concerns. The Russian Aeroflot airline also suspended the Moscow-Damascus route earlier this year citing commercial reasons.

According to Bogdanov, Russian citizens may also leave Syria via Lebanon or Jordan.

"I don't see any real problems with that now," he said, adding that the Russian authorities had warned citizens against traveling to Syria under current circumstances.
