At least eight Islamist insurgents were killed Monday when Pakistani planes bombed a hideout in a north-western tribal region, officials said, reported dpa.

The airstrike was launched on intelligence reports that a group of rebels involved in the weekend executions of 21 tribal policemen was present at the compound in Khyber district bordering Afghanistan, a security official told dpa.

Local administration officials confirmed the raid and casualties, but the identities of those killed were not revealed.

Pakistani Taliban insurgents killed the Levies policemen days after capturing them in an attack on two outposts near Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

Pakistani authorities also said one policeman had escaped, while another shot in the head was in critical condition in hospital.
