Baku-APA.The Israeli army dismissed as " baseless" a media report on Tuesday that its forces exchanged gunfire with Palestinian militants on the border with the Gaza Strip, APA reports.

An angry denial was issued hours after the Gaza bureau of a foreign news agency reported earlier in the day that Israeli tanks and bulldozers infiltrated Palestinian territory east of Khan Younis, prompting militants to detonate an explosive device.

The Israeli forces then "responded with heavy machine-gun fire, " said the report, citing "eyewitnesses and security sources." It further noted that there were no casualties on either side.

"The incidents depicted in the report are inaccurate at best and inflammatory at worst. There was no exchange of fire along the border," Captain Roni Kaplan, a military spokesman, told Xinhua.

An Israeli bulldozer was damaged after hitting an explosive device that was planted near the security fence, Kaplan said.

"At no point did Israeli troops come under fire or opened fire on any target within Gaza," he added.

"The Gaza region is volatile. Mistakes and inaccuracies can have an exponential effect on events in the area," the spokesman said. "The media's cardinal responsibility is to report events as they happen, honestly and credibly."
