Baku-APA. Iranian Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad Hosseini said Iranian people will weather Western sanctions, Press TV reported Wednesday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Referring to the unilateral sanctions of the United States against Iran over its controversial nuclear program, Hosseini said "illegal U.S.-engineered" sanctions imposed on Iran have proven to be ineffective.

"The Iranian nation has a global reputation for patience and persistence and is more experienced than before to weather the sanctions, therefore the United States' efforts will be futile," Hosseini was quoted as saying in the southeastern Iranian city of Zahedan.

"Imposing sanctions on Iran will harm the strategic interests of the United States in the long run," he added.

Last week, the United States imposed sanctions on seven more Iranian entities and five individuals to rev up the pressure on Iran over its controversial nuclear program.

Iran is under a number of unilateral Western sanctions on its oil and financial sectors over its controversial nuclear program.

The United States and its Western allies have accused Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons under the guise of its civilian nuclear program, a charge Tehran has consistently denied.
