Baku-APA. At least five people were killed and seven seriously injured when two groups entered into an armed clash over a land dispute in the southern province of Adana on Tuesday, APA reports quoting Todays Zaman.

The incident took place in Kösreli, a town in the district of Ceyhan. Sources from the police said there was a land dispute between two families that failed to reach a compromise despite efforts at reconciliation.

A quarrel on Tuesday turned into a direct clash in which both sides used firearms. Five people were killed in the fight. Among the dead, sources said, was a local politician from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party).

Mahmut Mazı, a member of the AK Party provincial council, and his son were also killed in the shooting. The injured were rushed to Ceyhan State Hospital.

Gendarmerie units and police special ops units have increased security measures to prevent a similar incident from taking place as the tensions are running high in the town.

Three individuals were detained as part of an investigation into the incident.

Prosecutors have begun an extensive investigation into the clash.
