Father of Afghan parliament speaker among casualties in suicide bombing

Baku-APA. At least four people including the father and a brother of Afghan parliament speaker were killed Wednesday evening as a suicide bombing went off in an area where a national game of Buzkashi was held in the northern province of Kunduz, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

"Based on initial information by our police, four people including the father and a brother of Speaker of Wolesi Jirga or Lower House of Parliament Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi were killed in the suicide bombing this evening," a provincial government spokesman told Xinhua.

Spokesman Hinayatullah Khaleeq said that six people including another brother of Ibrahimi were wounded in the bombing which took place in Imam Sahib District at around 5:30 p.m. local time.

Afghan security forces sealed off the scene, while police vans and civilian cars evacuated the victims to the district's hospital, witnesses told Xinhua.

Being playing in an big area, the Buzkashi or goat grabbing is Afghanistan's national sport game in which several horse riders compete to grab the carcass of goat or calf and put it inside the circle on the playing field.

The bomber, who detonated his suicide jacket among the crowd, was also killed on the spot.

A witness told Xinhua that more than 20 people were killed and wounded in the incident, adding, "The death toll could rise, as many injured remain in critical conditions."

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Taliban outfits routinely claim responsibility for such attacks.

The insurgent group has warned the civilians to stay away from official gatherings, military convoys and centers regarded as the legitimate targets by militants besides warning people against supporting government and foreign troops.
