Iran and six world powers failed to reach agreement during the talks and the two sides "remain far apart on substance" and did not make enough headway to qualify the meeting as a success, said Catherine Ashton, the European Union's head of foreign policy.

Meanwhile, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Iran and six global powers took a step forward at the talks on Tehran's nuclear program but failed to reach a compromise. He said they remain at odds over basic questions about the path to a solution.

Representatives of Iran and the U.N. Security Council's five permanent members -- the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China -- plus Germany, known as P5+1, as well as the EU, began a new round of talks here on Friday.
