Anti-government protests in Iran have intensified, with at least 78 people reported killed and more than 2,600 detained, according to an international human rights organisation, APA reports, citing CNN.
Demonstrations, triggered by public anger over worsening economic conditions, have spread across all provinces and reached more than 180 cities.
Witnesses and activists say security forces have used heavy force against large crowds. Medical sources report that hospitals are overwhelmed, with an Iranian doctor describing conditions as “extremely chaotic” and saying patients fear being identified amid a crackdown by the authorities.
An internet shutdown imposed by the government remains in place, monitoring groups say, although residents in Tehran report that the restrictions have failed to halt the protests.
