Newly released videos appear to show Iranian protesters returning to the streets overnight despite ongoing repression, with demonstrators reportedly taking control of several areas, APA reports, citing BBC.
A near-total internet blackout remains in place in Tehran, while hundreds of protesters are believed to have been detained.
Footage from Monday night suggests that protesters gained control of streets in Tehran’s Gisha district. Several videos verified by BBC Verify show clashes between protesters and security forces on Vakilabad Avenue in Mashhad, Iran’s second-largest city.
The images show masked protesters taking cover behind containers and burning barricades, with lines of security forces visible in the distance. A vehicle resembling a bus can be seen on fire.
In the same footage, a figure standing on a nearby pedestrian bridge appears to fire several shots in different directions, while others are seen hiding behind a roadside fence.
More videos have also emerged from other parts of the capital. One BBC Verify-confirmed clip shows a large group of protesters in Punak Square in western Tehran, banging pots during a demonstration. The area has been one of the main centres of protest in recent days.
Another video, filmed in Tehran’s north-eastern Haravi district, shows demonstrators marching through the streets and calling for an end to the current authorities.
The Iranian government has imposed internet shutdowns in an attempt to curb the protests. The country’s communications infrastructure remains under tight control by state and security bodies.
