The caretaker government of Bangladesh is stepping down ahead of the scheduled inauguration of Tariq Rahman, the leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the new prime minister, scheduled for Tuesday, APA reports.
"Today, the caretaker government resigns," Bangladesh's caretaker prime minister, Muhammad Yunus, said in an address to the nation, calling for continued practice of democracy, freedom of speech, and fundamental rights.
According to Yunus, "Bangladesh is no longer a country with a submissive foreign policy or dependent on the directions and advice of other countries."
The politician also noted the region's vast economic opportunities, highlighting the enormous growth potential of cooperation with Nepal, Bhutan, and northeastern India. He said Bangladesh's access to the sea is a strategic asset. "Our open sea is not just a geographical boundary; it is a gateway to the global economy," he added.
