One dead as torrential rains wreak havoc in southeastern Turkey

Baku-APA. Flash floods hit the southeastern province of Åžanlıurfa on Thursday, leaving one individual dead, APA reports quoting Today’s Zaman.

Many houses, workplaces and roads were flooded in the Harran, Akçakale and Ceylanpınar districts after it began raining late on Thursday, the first day of Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice).

The body of a Şanlıurfa resident, Ahmet Çakır, who drowned in the flood, was recovered by rescue teams on Friday morning.

Labor and Social Security Minister Faruk Çelik, who visited the Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party) regional office in the province, extended his condolences to the family of the flood victim.

“The rain caused significant damage to property. Teams from the Şanlıurfa Special Provincial Administration are working hard to clean up the debris,” Şanlıurfa Governor Celalettin Güvenç said adding that damage assessment is planned for the affected areas.

In a related incident, three people died early on Thursday in the southeastern province of Gaziantep when a bus was drifted in flood.
