Baku-APA. A powerful bomb has exploded in the Syrian capital of Damascus as foreign-backed insurgents continue attacks against civilians and government forces across the country, APA reports quoting Press TV.

The explosion occurred on Thursday when an insurgent on a motorbike detonated his explosives near Otham Bin Affan mosque in the capital’s southwestern area of Kafarsouseh.

No one has been hurt in the bomb attack, which took place a few hundred meters from the Syrian Interior Ministry building.

Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in a prolonged turmoil that began in Syria in March 2011.

Damascus blames ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists’ for the unrest, saying the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country.

There are also reports that a very large number of the armed militants are foreign nationals, mostly from Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan.

Western states have been calling for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down. However, Russia and China strongly oppose the Western drive to oust Assad.
