Iran links success of Baghdad talks to recognition of its int’l role: negotiator

Baku-APA. Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator said on Monday that the fate of the upcoming talks with the world powers depends on their recognition of Iran’s potential role in the international arena, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Negotiator Saeed Jalili made the remark at a meeting with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, whose country is to host the dialogue between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (P5+1).

The first round of their renewed nuclear talks concluded in Turkey’s Istanbul earlier this month, with both sides describing it as positive and agreeing to meet again in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on May 23.

The world powers’ "proper understanding" of Iran’s potential role on the international stage, which provides an opportunity for cooperation, is important for the fate of Baghdad nuclear talks, Jalili said, adding that the West’s dialogue-pressure approach towards Iran’s nuclear program has already failed.

For his part, al-Maliki said cooperation between his country and Iran will help bring peace, stability and security to the region.
